New Study: Washington State Smoking Ban Has Decreased Indoor Air Pollution by 88% [10/05/06-1]
Excerpts from: Lung Association says smoking ban has cut indoor pollution
KNDO [10/04/06]
The American Lung Association of Washington says the state smoking ban in bars and restaurants has resulted in a significant decrease in indoor air pollution.
The group says it took air samples in 35 bars and restaurants across the state, both before and after the law took effect last December. It found an 88 percent decrease in air pollutants.
The ban took effect after voters overwhelmingly passed Initiative 901 last November. It prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, minicasinos, most hotel rooms and most other non-tribal businesses that had been exempted under the state's Clean Indoor Air Act. The act had already banned smoking in most public places.
The initiative also added a provision for a 25-foot smoke-free buffer outside of buildings around doorways, windows that open and ventilation intakes.
First-time violators face warnings. After that, each violation is punishable by a maximum 100-dollar fine. Repeat offenders face suspension of licenses to operate and serve liquor.
