Conference Committee Members to Urge Them Not to Support Tobacco Bill Without FDA Regulation [10/06-4]

Excerpts from: Conference committee votes against FDA authority - final vote on bill today]

Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids [10/06/04]

Yesterday, the conference committee on the FSC/ETI tax bill voted against Sen. Kennedy's amendment to add FDA authority over tobacco to the bill. Senate conferees voted 15 to 8 to add FDA authority, but House conferees voted 8 to 3 against it. The conference committee is expected to vote on final passage of the bill this morning. We continue to urge all conferees who support FDA authority to vote against the final bill and refuse to sign the conference report unless it includes FDA authority over tobacco. We expect another vote on an FDA / Buyout amendment to the FSC bill today after 10:00 AM eastern time. This amendment will be offered by Senator Harkin of Iowa. His amendment will contain the same FDA language that we've been fighting for all summer but will include a slightly different buyout proposal than what Senator Kennedy offered yesterday.

Thanks for all the hard work you have done and continue to do to help move this legislation. We urge everyone to contact members of the conference committee (see list below) and urge them not to sign the conference report if it does not include FDA authority over tobacco. Their district and state office phone numbers are available through each Member's web site at www.house.gov and www.senate.gov. Otherwise, their Washington, DC, offices can be reached through the Congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121.
