Cincinnati: Smoking Ban to be Introduced at Next City Council Meeting [03/31-5]

Excerpts from: Smoking-ban bill on council's agenda for April meeting

The Enquirer [03/30/05]

The end of Cincinnati's year-long debate on a smoking ban could be decided April 12, at the next meeting of City Council's health, tourism, small business and employment committee.

Vice Mayor Alicia Reece, who chairs the committee, said Tuesday she expects to introduce a bill at that time. The meeting starts at 11 a.m.

Reece has asked the city solicitor's office to draft different versions of a smoking ban - one that would ban smoking in every city workplace, and one that would make exceptions for certain businesses, such as bars and restaurants.

Neither version appears to have much support with other committee members. Councilman Chris Monzel has said that businesses should retain the freedom to set their own smoking policies, while Councilman Sam Malone prefers to have the Ohio legislature deal with it.
