Am. Lung Association of Miss. Is Providing Free Cessation Kits [06/21-1]

Excerpts from Lung association offers nicotine kits for smokers

Biloxi Sun Herald [06/19/99]

Quitting smoking just got a little easier and cheaper, courtesy of the American Lung Association of Mississippi, known as ALAM.

The organization is providing a limited number of the free Nicotrol Nicotine Transdermal Patch kits to people over 18 who want to quit smoking.

The Nicotrol kit is a stop smoking aid that includes an audiotape, instructions, tips for quitting, and a six-week supply of patches. The patch reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting.

According to the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, nicotine replacement is one of the most effective therapies for quitting. Nicotine replacement may come in the form of a patch, chewing gum, an inhaler or a nasal spray. The patch slowly delivers a steady dose of nicotine through the skin during waking hours and is removed before bedtime.

ALAM received the patches from the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, a statewide organization devoted to reducing tobacco use among Mississippians. They are making them available to Mississippian over the age of 18 who requests them.

For a free, six-week supply of Nicotrol patches and a starter kit, call ALAM at (800) 737-5453.
