ASH Seeks New General Counsel - Please Help Distribute [06/20/06-2]

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), America’s oldest, largest, and in many ways the most influential antismoking and nonsmokers’ rights organization, is seeking an experienced lawyer to serve as its new General Counsel.  ASH serves as the legal action arm of the antismoking community, and has played a major role in the war on smoking and in protecting nonsmokers’ rights.  Please see: http://ash.org/victories.html

The duties of the General Counsel include conducting and directing the legal-action activities of the organization – including bringing, encouraging and supporting legal actions in courts and before agencies – as well as ASH’s legislative activities; acting as a liaison with other tobacco control organizations, legislators, agency personnel, and others; assisting the Executive Director with administrative tasks which include research, public education, public relations, etc. and, if possible, assuming greater administrative and supervisory duties when the Executive Director is traveling or otherwise unavailable.

ASH is seeking a lawyer with considerable experience in relevant areas who is capable of operating on his or her own initiative with minimal direction and supervision.  Prior experience in one or more public interest areas of law and/or employment by another public interest organization; experience in preparing complaints, petitions for rulemaking, participating in hearings, etc. before administrative agencies; thorough familiarity with Internet research and the design, organization, and maintenance of Internet web sites, etc. are all desirable but not necessarily required.

Persons who wish to apply should send a detailed resume – including salary at current and prior positions, and desired/expected compensation – along with at least two samples of significant legal writing (at least one of which should be a court or agency litigation document) by email to: apply@ash.org.

ASH’s compensation will be commensurate with experience and other qualifications.

Please do not call.  Candidates who are selected for an interview will be notified, and interviews may be conducted before or during the World Conference on Tobacco or Health in Washington DC.  ASH is an equal opportunity employer.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS DOCUMENT TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED.
