Belgium Bans Cigarette Sales to Minors Under 16 Years [12/01-2]

Excerpts from: Under-age smoking ban arrives

Expatica [11/30/04]

From 1 December, cigarette sales to under-16s in Belgium will be banned.

Health Minister Rudy Demotte has introduced tough new measures to make it harder for children to buy tobacco.

Shops and tobacconists are to demand ID from young people buying cigarettes and, under a change to the 1977 Belgian health law, can be forced to display anti-smoking posters or signs stating under 16s may not buy tobacco.

The move is part of the government’s national anti-smoking plan, launched in January.

By January 2006, cigarette machines should also be adapted to make it harder for children to use them. Manufacturers are considering whether to introduce a remote control or token system, which would let shopkeepers block access to under-age consumers.

Studies have shown that the number of young people smoking has doubled in the last 10 years and that the vast majority of smokers become addicted in their adolescence.
