Vibo Corp. Will Pay $1.7B in Master Settlement Agreement [08/20-5]
Excerpts from: Vibo to pay up to $1.7 billion in cigarette settlement
Vibo Corp., which sells generic cigarettes, agreed to pay as much as $1.7 billion over 10 years to U.S. states as it joins larger tobacco companies in a settlement over health-care costs related to smoking.
Miami-based Vibo will make an initial payment of $78 million to the 46 states, New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey said in a faxed statement.
Vibo, which sells GT One and Bronco cigarettes, is the largest company that had not been part of the 1998 settlement, Harvey said in the statement. A voice-mail message to Vibo Corp. wasn't immediately returned.
Altria Group Inc., R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Brown & Williamson Tobacco and Loews Corp.'s Lorillard Inc. agreed in 1998 to pay 46 states $206 billion over 25 years and not target youth in their advertising.
