AZ Majority Support Smoking Bans [08/28-3]

Excerpts from: Majority support smoking ban in public places

By HOWARD FISCHER AZ DAILYSUN.COM [08/27/03]

Arizona residents appear to be ready to ban smoking in public places, a new statewide survey shows. But they're not convinced that it will make any difference in some of their habits.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters shows two thirds of those asked want to outlaw smoking in enclosed places where the public goes. That figure could be attributed at least in part to the margin of Arizonans who do not smoke.

Pollster Michael O'Neil said 59 percent of those asked said they would be more likely to patronize a restaurant if they knew that smoking was not allowed there, versus 8 percent who would choose to go elsewhere. The remainder of those asked said it really made no difference.

Lopez is willing to consider permitting smoking on outdoor bars and patios. But here, too, she wants to make sure that patrons -- and employees -- do not have to walk through "a cloud of smoke.''
