Students Push for Smoking Ban [08/22-4]

Excerpts from: High-school students push a smoking ban

By Mike Rutledge The Kentucky Post [08/20/03]

Covington should follow Lexington's lead and ban smoking in restaurants and other public buildings, a student group from Holmes High School urged city commissioners Tuesday.

The Center Stage Players, a student leadership group working to help teens resist alcohol, drugs and tobacco, praised city commissioners for their recent ban of smoking in public parts of city government buildings. But the students urged them to go further.

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council voted 11-3 last month to ban smoking in most buildings that are open to the public, over the objections of bar owners, who complained the ban would cut into their business. Lexington's ban will take effect Sept. 29.

Several students made their case using a slide presentation, statistics about the hazards of tobacco and copies of the Lexington legislation and minutes from meetings there.

During a recent trip she made to Florida, Ashley Richards, 15, said she visited restaurants where smoking was prohibited -- "and it was wonderful."

It makes no sense to have smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants, because the smoke spreads across the buildings, the students argued.
