Excerpts from: Muslim restaurants support against teen smoking

About 2,000 restaurant operators nationwide have come out in support of a campaign against under-age smoking.

The Muslim Restaurant Operators Association (Presma), in a statement today, said it would reinforce the message that selling cigarettes to teenagers is illegal through posters and stickers at all outlets.

“We view the selling of cigarettes to under-18s as irresponsible and damaging to our image as restaurant operators,” Presma president Jamarulkhan Kadir said.

Presma’s members would give the posters and stickers a prominent place in their restaurants to get the message across effectively, he said.

CMTM chief executive officer Shaik Abbas Ibrahim said preventing under-18s from buying cigarettes was everyone’s social responsibility.

“Support from restaurant operators such as Presma is critical because they are the first line of defence against under-age smoking,” he said.
