Some state lawmakers want to ban smoking in all public places, but the effort
won't go without a fight from Middle Georgia tobacco interests.
Legislation to ban smoking in public locations will be introduced in next year's
General Assembly by Sen. Don Thomas, R-Dalton. Thomas, a physician, is chairman
of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee.
Anti-tobacco groups said banning smoking in public places will reduce smoking-related
illnesses and help the state cut health-care costs.
"Exposure to second-hand smoke is really related with a host of health
conditions, particularly with children, including sudden infant death syndrome,
respiratory infections and low birth weight," said Andy Lord, director
of tobacco initiatives for the American Cancer Society in Georgia.
