Regulations against smoking are found in public buildings, restaurants and bars. But now in Anne Arundel County, officials have banned smoking outdoors in public parks.

WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Rob Roblin reported that more than 60,000 young people attend events at parks in Anne Arundel County. The tobacco ban means that smokeless tobacco is prohibited. All this is an effort to keep tobacco products away from children, Roblin said.

Under the ban that takes effect Sept. 1, smoking is prohibited within 100 yards of any organized children's activities. All tobacco products will be banned at playgrounds, concession stands and restrooms, Roblin reported.

"I coach baseball and us coaches, anytime we're around the players, none of the coaches smoke, even if they do smoke, just to set that example," smoking ban supporter Dean Randolph said.

"I'm definitely for it because I don't see the reason why people have to smoke near kids' activities," smoking ban supporter Tricia Hurlbutt said.

Violators who are caught breaking the law will be given a leaflet (pictured, left) that explains the ban. But if the violator continues to smoke, they could be banned form park, Roblin reported.
