Dalton McGuinty says he would make Ontario a smoke-free province if his Liberals
win the next election.
The Liberals say they want to implement a strategy that would ban smoking
in all public and work places within three years.
"Our tough anti-smoking strategy will bring real, positive change to Ontario,"
McGuinty said in a news release.
Other aspects of the Liberals' proposed strategy include: higher prices for
cigarettes; a ban on cigarette displays in retail stores; use of extra tax money
to help smokers quit; creation of a youth-oriented anti-smoking campaign; encouraging
farmers to move away from growing tobacco.
The Liberals say smoking is killing 12,000 Ontarians a year, and is a $4 billion
drag on the health care system and economy.
He said that Ontario is reaching the critical mass of municipal smoking bans
that makes a province-wide policy necessary.
