WA House Approves Cigarette Tax Increase [04/22-4]
Excerpts from: House approves "sin" tax increases
By KELLY KEARSLEY Seattle Post-Intelligencer [04/22/05]
The state House has narrowly approved package of "sin" taxes, including increases in cigarette and liquor taxes.
The House voted 50 to 48 late Thursday night, the minimum number of yes votes required for passage, to increase the tax on cigarettes by 60 cents a pack and the tax on hard liquor by $1.33 per liter. Restaurants and bars would be exempt from the liquor tax increase.
The sin tax bill was sent to the Senate for further action.
The estimated $175 million from the cigarette tax hike and $135 million from the estate tax, both over the next two years, would go into an education legacy trust fund that is intended to expand access to the state's higher education system.
