University of Cincinnati students are voting on whether to forbid smoking on most campus areas.

The administration hasn't said how it will respond if students approve the restrictions, university spokesman Greg Hand said Tuesday. The university's board of trustees must vote on any change to school rules.

The current policy bans smoking indoors except in residence halls, which set their own policies. The Student Government Association proposal now before the students would expand restrictions to most outdoor areas of the 194-acre campus, except in designated areas including open-air parking lots, the central McMicken Lawn and locations near athletic venues.

Student government leaders said they hoped the issue and a separate proposal to increase the student fee by $8 to fund a transportation service to popular destinations would increase voter turnout to about 10,000. The voting began Monday and ends on Wednesday.

This year's annual student government election ballot, for the first time, includes issues besides candidates. Student government elections typically draw about 3,000 of the university's 35,300 full- and part-time students.

Results of the online voting could be announced as soon as Wednesday night.
