Corvallis, OR Considers Banning Smoking in Parks [04/04-3]

Excerpts from: City Considers Banning Smoking in Parks

KOIN News [04/01/05]

The Corvallis City Council is to get a proposal Monday that would add the city to a handful of Oregon jurisdictions banning smoking in parks.

Smoking already is prohibited in Grants Pass city parks, except in parking lots. In Bend, it's illegal to use any tobacco product or to smoke in any park or playground.

The Wasco County Park and Recreation District banned the use of all tobacco products in parks and parking lots in 2000.

Oregon used to be a leader in tobacco prevention. But its rank by the American Lung Association has fallen from the fourth to 38th.

Leman partially blamed lawmakers' borrowing from funds such as the tobacco fund to balance the state budget.
