LA Bans Smoking on Four Beaches [04/26-1]

Excerpts from: Los Angeles Bans Smoking on Four Beaches

Newsday [04/24/04]

The City Council voted Friday to ban smoking on four beaches. Mayor James Hahn will sign the ordinance, spokesman Yusef Robb said.

The ban will apply to the sandy parts of Venice, Cabrillo, Will Rogers and Dockweiler beaches. It also will extend to the pier at Venice Beach, said Weiss' spokeswoman Lisa Hansen.

The council also approved forming a panel to study designated smoking areas on the beaches.

In March, San Clemente officials banned beach smoking. Piers in Orange County and Solana Beach in San Diego County became smoke-free in October.

Last month, Santa Monica leaders tentatively approved a beach smoking ban; the City Council is expected to approve the ban Tuesday.
