Free Nicotine Patch Helps 11,000 New Yorkers Quit Smoking [04/22-2]
Excerpts from: Patch Helps New Yorkers Quit Smoking
Newsday [04/22/04]
A city program offering free nicotine patches to New Yorkers trying to stop smoking helped 11,000 people quit, according to the city's health department.
About one in three people who used the free patches was able to quit and remain tobacco-free for six months, the department said in a statement.
Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said the results far exceeded the department's expectations of a success rate of at most 10 to 15 percent.
The program provided a free six-week supply of patches to more than 34,000 people who requested them by phone and followed up with phone calls six months later.
