WI Governor Signs Smoking Ban for All Public State University Dorms [04/19-3]
Excerpts from: Doyle signs smoking ban into law All UW dormitories included; Governor signs six other bills
By Jim Collar The NorthWestern [04/17/04]
A smoking ban instituted for the dormitories at the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh three years ago is now state law and will apply for dorms at
all of Wisconsin’s public universities.
Gov. James Doyle signed the smoking ban into law along with six other bills during a Friday ceremony at Reeve Memorial Union. The new law will eliminate smoking both inside dorms and within 25 feet of the buildings.
Joe Abhold, director of the UWO Counseling Center, said the smoke ban should benefit the health of many young people in Wisconsin. It follows research that shows college students are less likely to start smoking if they live in smoke-free environments.
“This legislation saves lives and protects students,” he said. “It will help the health of students in this state.”
