Malta Begins Smoking Ban Most Public Places Excluding Bars and Restaurants [04/05-4]

Excerpts from: Smoking ban introduced on Monday

By Paul Cachia di-ve.com [04/05/04]

A ban on smoking came into force as planned on Monday April 5, for public places as hospitals, schools, government departments, radio and television studios and sports centres among others.

On the other hand, the government decided to postpone the introduction of the smoking ban in bars and restaurants in order to avoid a confrontation with the Association of General Retailers and Traders (GRTU). The union was prepared to challenge the regulation if they came into force as proposed.

In fact, restaurants and bars measuring over 60 square metres were given up to six months to come into line with the law. They would have to designate specific smoking areas.
